Lérida Estate
Lérida Estate is a farm with a rich and unique history. Its founder, Tollef B. Monniche, arrived in Panama from Norway in 1907 to work as an engineer on the Panama Canal. Retiring in 1924, he and his wife bought a small farm in Boquete, Panama, naming it after the Spanish city of Lerida. He built a house on the farm and planted coffee trees, fruits, and vegetables. He constructed a dam on the farm to supply water to the coffee processing plant and developed and patented a device called the "Sifon" for separating ripe and unripe coffee cherries. This device is still in use today, not only at Hacienda Lerida but also on coffee farms worldwide.
Today, Hacienda Lerida is run by the Chiari family, who coordinate coffee cultivation with the conservation of the surrounding rainforest. The estate also houses an eco-tourism hotel, offering visitors the opportunity to tour the farm and experience the ambiance of the rainforest. The farm, located at an altitude of 1,750-1,880 meters, cultivates coffee varieties including Caturra, Catuai, and, most notably, Geisha, all processed in a variety of ways.
This batch of coffee beans is 100% Geisha. It produces elongated, bluish-green beans with rich, floral aromas. It's a modified and trained T2722 Geisha strain. Price Peterson, owner of Hacienda Esmeralda in Panama, experimented with growing T2722 Geisha several years ago, planting it alongside other varieties. He rediscovered an exceptional variety with rich, fruity aromas, floral notes, and jammy flavors, while possessing a balance and finesse not found in other coffees. Coffee farmers in other countries have followed suit, and this variety regularly wins awards at Cup of Excellence competitions around the world. Washed Gesha T2722 is thoroughly washed, meaning the skin and pulp (the pulp surrounding the husk) are completely removed during the post-fermentation grinding process, and then sun-dried on terraces.
Natural Gesha, on the other hand, is left unwashed and slowly sun-dried with fully ripe cherries carefully rotated and aired to ensure a cool, dry base
